One of Kenya’s most entertaining local administrators – Chief Protus Wechuli, popularly known as ‘Chief wa Misheveve’ – has officially retired, marking the end of a colourful public service career that blended community leadership with viral humour.

In a joyous retirement ceremony held on April 5, 2025, in Saboti, Trans Nzoia County, citizens from all walks of life came together to celebrate the charismatic chief whose unique communication style earned him national recognition.

Locally known as Protus Wechuli Sifuna, he had served as area chief since 2007.

The Misheveve chief shot to prominence after a 2016 video of him narrating a crime in his jurisdiction resurfaced and went viral in 2024 – eight years later.

Chief Misheveve endeared himself to many through his humorous and relatable storytelling. Here are five of his most unforgettable, funny moments:

1. The ‘Misheveve’ Incident

Chief Wechuli captivated many with his charming blend of humour and reliability.

His signature catchphrase ‘misheveve’ became symbolic of his engaging style and helped cement his online fame.

He gained widespread attention through a viral video in which he described a tragic but hilariously told incident where a young man attacked his father after a dispute over vegetables.

Akaulizia mama ‘unapika mbogo gani?’ Mama akasema ‘leo nimeunda misheveve’. Kijana akasema ‘sikutaka hizi ilitaka sarat’,” the chief narrated.

Alianza kwa kutafuna mzee vidole. Anatafuna mzee vidole ni kama anatafuna omena na kumbe anafanya hesabu ya minus kwa uhai wa mzee na mzee huyu ni mkaza,” he added, leaving his audience in stitches.

This anecdote solidified his nickname, ‘Chief wa Misheveve’.

2. Welcoming the Agriculture CEC

During a public event, Chief Wechuli introduced Trans Nzoia County Agriculture CEC Phanice Khatundi with characteristic flair and playful charm.

Kitovu chetu cha Trans Nzoia county, kitovu kiko hapa mroki, ukweli ama hapana? Bila kujikuna unywele wala utosi namkaribisha waziri wetu wa Kilimo Phanice Khatundi. Unaone ye anaoganga soda ya Fanta ama mi nasema… Undeni makofi makuu ya campaign tumkaribishe mschana wetu glamorias,” he said amid laughter.

His witty remarks always had the crowd laughing.

3. Describing SHA

Chief Wechuli’s take on the newly introduced Social Health Authority (SHA) had many amused by his playful misuse of big words.

“SHA is very malignant, very maligadenious, and magnificent,” he said.

This blend of humour and unique vocabulary became a trademark of his public addresses.

4. From classroom to chieftaincy

Chief Wechuli once revealed that he was a teacher before being appointed chief.

He was at St. Athanas Kassawai Secondary School in Saboti when he received the news.

“I was in St Athanas Kassawai Secondary School which is in Saboti. You know a teacher is very instructive; they cannot be destructive.”

He humorously explained that a teacher is a pupil who helps others become as clever as he is—capturing his light-hearted but thoughtful perspective on leadership.

5. Retirement Humour

At his retirement event, Chief Wechuli’s wit was still intact as he joked about handing back everything—including government-issued items.

Nilirudisha ata stapler, nikarudisha uniform, nikarudisha fimbo ya serikali basi ikanibakishia tu suruali ndo niko nayo ndo hii,” he said, sparking laughter from residents.

He also circled back to his beloved misheveve in one last quip:

Misheveve iko very economical kwa sababu gani? Tena ukipika si inaiva haraka ukicompare na sarat? Na tena misheveve inatembelea chini, unaweza kufanyia usherati kwa misheveve kweli, si mtu atakuona? Aya na unaona ata sarat inakua mbaka juu.
