This is not the time for blame: Jalang’o reacts after Nairobi flooding

Lang’ata Member of Parliament (MP) Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has urged calm after the recent floods in Nairobi, saying the focus should be on solutions rather than blame.

In a post on social media on Saturday, March 7, 2026, he highlighted that last night’s floods exposed serious weaknesses in the city’s infrastructure.

“The systems we currently have can no longer support the city’s rapidly growing population,” he said.

He said that the current situation is a wake-up call for the city’s leaders and residents. According to Jalang’o, Nairobi needs urgent improvements in key areas to prevent future flooding and damage.

“We must rethink Nairobi’s development—starting with modern sewage systems, improved drainage, and better roads,” he added.

Jalang’o pointed out that the responsibility lies with leaders to address the shortcomings.

He said, “As leaders, we must carry the responsibility and acknowledge where we have fallen short. This is not the time for blame. Blame will not solve the problem.”

His message comes as many residents continue to deal with flooded streets, damaged property, and disrupted daily life.

He stressed the importance of planning for the future, saying Nairobi cannot rely on outdated systems to manage a growing population. According to him, the city requires a comprehensive approach that considers long-term solutions rather than temporary fixes.

“Instead, we must return to the drawing board, develop a comprehensive Nairobi master plan, and ensure that it is fully implemented for the benefit of our city and future generations,” he said.

Jalang’o also highlighted that disasters like these show how quickly problems can escalate when infrastructure fails. He urged everyone involved in urban planning and development to take responsibility and act decisively. For him, collaboration between the government, engineers, and the community is essential to prevent future floods.

Residents affected by the floods have faced challenges ranging from submerged roads to blocked drainage systems. Jalang’o’s warning underlines that ignoring these issues will only worsen the situation in the future. According to Jalang’o, the focus should be on solutions, modernising infrastructure, and prioritising Nairobi’s long-term safety over finger-pointing.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), the heavy overnight rain in Nairobi has caused widespread flooding, resulting in 23 deaths, property destruction, road closures, and the displacement of residents.

NPS has conducted search and rescue operations, successfully saving 29 people while monitoring ongoing emergency situations.
