Daddy Owen: Nairobi floods persist because City planning is decades old

Gospel musician Daddy Owen has criticised the government over recurring floods in Nairobi, saying the city’s outdated infrastructure is to blame.
In a post shared on Friday, March 6, 2026, he highlighted that much of the city’s planning, sewer systems, and drainage networks were designed decades ago and are no longer effective.
“I once heard a politician say that Nairobi’s planning was done decades ago and that much of its infrastructure, sewer systems, drainage networks, and other critical designs, has long since become outdated,” Daddy Owen said.
“But then the question arises: what is the solution? Are we condemned to capsize in floods every rainy season?”

He said the continued flooding is frustrating, especially in a country with skilled engineers and planners who could implement lasting solutions. Daddy Owen suggested that the recurring problems feel less like bad luck and more like negligence or mismanagement.
“Surely, in a country filled with capable engineers, planners, and brilliant minds, a lasting solution cannot be beyond reach,” he said. “Yet the persistence of the same problems year after year begins to feel less like misfortune and more like something happening by design. This is sad.”
Celebrities demand action on flooding
Daddy Owen is not alone in raising concerns about Nairobi’s floods. Several other celebrities have also called out the government for failing to improve infrastructure and prepare for heavy rains. They argue that residents face avoidable hardship every year due to poor planning.
The floods have caused road closures, displacement, and damage to property across Nairobi and the surrounding areas. Citizens have expressed frustration over the lack of preparedness from emergency services and local authorities.

Daddy Owen explains that solutions exist but require commitment from the government and city planners. He urged authorities to invest in better drainage, sewer systems, and urban planning to prevent future floods.
Public figures say that the government must take action to upgrade infrastructure and improve urban planning. They stress that solutions exist but require commitment and proper execution.

Celebrities like Daddy Owen continue to pressure the authorities to prioritise infrastructure development and long-term solutions for the city.
