Ruto warns youth from being called ‘Bazenga’ or ‘Bazuu’ after receiving govt funds

President William Ruto left many in stitches on Monday, January 19, 2026, after he made an attempt to warn the youth against being tempted to spend money meant for business on other things.

While speaking at Kasarani Stadium during the disbursement of business start-up capital to beneficiaries, the president mentioned that he is aware there are individuals who deliberately target young people who have received government funds, with the intention of misleading them into irresponsible spending.

Ruto noted that such characters often disguise themselves as friends or associates, only to derail beneficiaries from their original business goals. He cautioned that this behaviour has contributed to the failure of many youth-led enterprises in the past, despite the availability of financial support.

The president went further and humorously mentioned the names commonly used to entice recipients, a move that drew laughter from the crowd. He cited terms such as “Bazuu”, a popular Sheng word among the youth, and ‘Master’, which is often used to inflate one’s ego and encourage reckless behaviour.

According to Ruto, these flattering titles are often meant to pressure young people into spending their funds on entertainment, alcohol, or unnecessary luxuries, rather than investing in sustainable ventures.

He urged the youth to remain disciplined, focused, and intentional with the resources they receive, emphasising that the funds are meant to transform their lives and create long-term economic stability.

Naskia kuna mtu atakuita sasa ‘Wakudumu’, ‘Bazenga’, ‘Bazuu’, ‘Master’. Hio maneno mjichunge. Kila mtu ajipange na biashara ndio tuweze kusonga mbele pamoja,” Ruto said.

Loosely translating to, “I hear there is someone who will call you big names like ‘Wakudumu’, ‘Bazenga’, ‘Bazuu’, and ‘Master’. Avoid such influences. Everyone should organize themselves around their businesses so that we can move forward together.”

The head of state reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering young people through financial inclusion, skills development, and entrepreneurship support. He added that accountability and personal responsibility are key pillars in ensuring the success of such initiatives.

Ruto further encouraged beneficiaries to seek mentorship, keep proper financial records, and reinvest profits back into their businesses. He stressed that prudent management of the funds would not only uplift individual livelihoods but also contribute to national economic growth.
