Ruto promises Ksh1M each to Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer ahead of boxing showdown
President William Ruto has pledged Ksh 1 million each to the popular amateur boxers Majembe and Mbavu the Destroyer ahead of their highly anticipated showdown.
The pledge came during an interaction with Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, alias Jalang’o, on Sunday, February 8, 2026, highlighting the growing public excitement around the fight.
During the conversation, Jalang’o jokingly brought up “weka mawe”, Mbavu Destroyer’s signature online catchphrase, prompting a response from Ruto:
“Sasa huyu Majembe na Mbavu the Destroyer, huyu wa kueka mawe, mimi nawatakia heri. Wende Washughulike na mimi naekea Majembe one million, Mbavu Destroyer one million. Alafu kwa sababu kuna watu wanaenda kuwatch, mimi nitalipa 2,000 tickets.”
In the conversation, Ruto used light-hearted language but made it clear that the pledges were official, with funds to back both fighters. He also confirmed he would sponsor 2,000 tickets for fans to witness the fight.

The fight, initially an online rivalry filled with playful trash talk, has now evolved into a national spectacle. Clips of the boxers’ training and “weka mawe” antics have gone viral, sparking memes and challenges that have captured nationwide attention.
Organised by media personality Oga Obinna, the fight has captured the imagination of fans across social media platforms. Viral clips and commentary have fuelled the frenzy, bringing a new level of attention to grassroots boxing in the country.
Celebrity involvement has also amplified interest. Entertainers and influencers have publicly picked sides, with personalities such as Khaligraph Jones and Alfayo Siwo joining in to support their preferred fighter and spark debate among followers online.
Earlier this week, Oketch Salah also made headlines by pledging Ksh 200,000 towards the event, further boosting the resources available for preparations and prizes.
Scheduled for Saturday, April 4, 2026, the match continues to generate excitement as fans, celebrities, and now political figures rally behind their favourite fighters.
