‘Politics is brutal and unforgiving’ – Jalang’o reflects after 1st term as Lang’ata MP

With political temperatures rising, Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has given his reflections on his political career, unpacking a side that is often blinded by the illusion of power, influence and fame.

According to Jalang’o, a career is defined by a very clear pathway in which there is one winner, with those who don’t secure victory leaving empty-handed.

He noted that politics is not only brutal but also unforgiving, with those who choose it having to face voters on the ground who wield the ultimate power.

Jalang’o: Politics has a defined pathway

In a statement on Facebook, Jalang’o painted a clear picture of the path he is on after declaring his interest in becoming the next Senator for Nairobi, saying that the script is simple: Declare, campaign and win.

“Politics is brutal, unforgiving, ground! The only career with a defined pathway! Declare, Campaign, winner takes it all!!” he stated.

Jalang’o announced on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, that his Lang’ata constituents have given him their blessing as he targets the Nairobi Senate seat.

“Mimi nishaamua kupanda juu, watu wangu wa Langata wamenibariki, mimi naweza kuwa Senator wa Nairobi. Ni mbaya!” Jalang’o said during a public gathering in the city.

Ruto’s shadow looms large in his bid

The Lang’ata MP has exuded confidence in emerging victorious, stating that the decision to go for the seat was a personal one and not influenced by anyone, including President William Ruto.

“Nawania kiti cha senator…Mimi huamua na naendea. Mimi nakuambia naweza kuwa gavana wa Nairobi, na naweza kuwa seneta wa Nairobi, na naweza kuwa mbunge wa Lang’ata, na naweza kuwa mbunge wa pahali popote hapa Nairobi. Maana nimetembea, nimesikia, nimewaongelesha… why not? Nitaendea!” he earlier said on a local radio station.

Despite his clarification, what appeared to be a public endorsement of Jalang’o’s bid has seen Ruto’s shadow loom large as the MP insists that he did not enter the race as part of an arithmetic to keep the opposition in check, with the incumbent Edwin Sifuna eyeing the seat.
