The Last House review: A family trapped with nowhere to run

The Last House is a 2026 science fiction horror thriller that follows a family of four who suddenly find themselves trapped inside their own home. With no way to open the doors or escape through the windows, the family must find a way to survive as food, water, and other basic supplies slowly run out.
The story begins with a simple family trip
The film introduces Jason, his wife Ann and their two children, Ruth and Graham. The family returns home after a fishing trip, expecting life to continue normally. Things change when they realise something is wrong with their house.
The doors will not open, while the windows cannot be broken or forced open. Their electronic devices also stop working properly. At first, the family believes the problem could be temporary, but it soon becomes clear that they are dealing with something much bigger.
They also discover that they are not the only ones affected. Other homes in the area appear to have been sealed as well. The family now has to stay inside and work out how to survive without knowing who or what is keeping them there.
Survival becomes their biggest challenge

One of the film’s strongest ideas is how quickly normal life can disappear. A comfortable house, food in the kitchen and the ability to walk outside suddenly become things the family can no longer take for granted.
The mystery outside the house
The biggest question throughout The Last House is what is keeping the family trapped.
The film deliberately takes its time before giving clear answers. Strange events outside the house create fear, while the family gradually learns that there is a dangerous presence around them.
Eventually, the threat becomes more difficult to ignore. The family has to think beyond simply waiting for help. Their survival depends on understanding what is outside and finding a way to deal with it.
Ruth brings another side to the story
Ruth becomes particularly important as the family faces the threat outside.
While Jason often focuses on protecting the family through practical decisions, Ruth approaches their situation differently. Her actions show that survival is not always about destroying whatever threatens you.
Does the family escape?
The family’s situation eventually reaches a point where staying inside the house is no longer an option. A creature manages to breach their safe space, putting their food and water at risk and forcing the family to act.
Jason, Ann, Ruth and Graham come together to make a final attempt to escape. Their plan does not simply depend on strength. They have to understand the creature and use what they have learnt during their years of confinement.
The Last House works best when it focuses on the family and the pressure of being trapped together. The idea of turning an ordinary home into a place of confinement gives the film an interesting starting point.
