‘Klara and the Sun’ trailer: Breakdown of the story, cast and key reveals

Sony Pictures has released the first full trailer for Klara and the Sun, offering audiences a deeper look at the highly anticipated adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s bestselling novel.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the film stars Jenna Ortega as Klara, an Artificial Friend (AF) designed to provide companionship in a futuristic society.

The trailer, which runs for just over two minutes, introduces viewers to a world where advanced artificial intelligence exists alongside human loneliness, love and loss.

The trailer opens inside a store where Artificial Friends wait to be chosen by families. Klara, portrayed by Ortega, is an older model who spends her days observing the world and drawing hope from the Sun, which she believes possesses healing powers.

Her life changes when she is selected to become the companion of Josie, a young girl dealing with health challenges.

As their bond deepens, Klara begins to navigate complex emotions and questions about what it truly means to care for another person.

The footage hints at themes of family, sacrifice, identity and humanity, all central elements of Ishiguro’s acclaimed novel.

Meet the cast

Ortega leads an impressive ensemble cast that includes Mia Tharia as Josie and Amy Adams as Josie’s mother, Chrissie.

The trailer also features Steve Buscemi and Natasha Lyonne, who appear to play key roles in the film’s futuristic world.

Many fans have already praised Ortega’s performance in the preview, noting how she captures Klara’s innocence, curiosity and growing understanding of human emotions.

Key trailer reveals

One of the biggest takeaways from the trailer is the film’s visual style. Waititi blends warm golden sunlight imagery with sleek futuristic settings, creating a contrast between technology and human connection.

The footage also suggests the adaptation will balance emotional drama with moments of humour, a trademark of Waititi’s filmmaking style.

While the novel is known for its quiet and reflective tone, the trailer presents a slightly brighter and more accessible approach without losing the emotional weight of the story.

Klara and the Sun is scheduled to arrive in theatres on Friday, October 23, 2026.
