Enola Holmes 3 review: A Malta mystery that brings love, danger and family secrets

Enola Holmes 3 is a mystery, adventure and crime film that follows young detective Enola as she faces a case that becomes personal before she can even enjoy one of the biggest days of her life.

The film in the Netflix series moves Enola away from London and takes her to Malta, where a wedding, a missing brother and hidden secrets pull her into a dangerous investigation. It has the quick humour and clever clues that fans know from the earlier films, but this time the story carries a more serious mood.

A wedding that does not go as planned

The film opens with Enola Holmes preparing to marry Lord Tewkesbury, the young politician she has grown close to since the earlier films. Their relationship has grown, but Enola is still unsure about what marriage could mean for her independence and detective work.

Before the wedding can go ahead, Dr Watson arrives with troubling news. Enola’s older brother, Sherlock Holmes, has disappeared.

Sherlock is not the kind of man who simply walks away without leaving a clue. His disappearance immediately raises questions, and Enola knows there is more to the matter than it first appears. She leaves behind the wedding plans and begins following a trail that leads her into Malta’s busy streets, old buildings and hidden corners.

Enola takes charge of the investigation

As Enola searches for Sherlock, she finds herself dealing with a mystery involving stolen wealth, powerful people and secrets connected to Britain’s past. The case becomes more dangerous as she learns that some people are willing to do anything to keep the truth hidden.

The story also introduces Mizzi, a Maltese woman whose life is linked to the wider mystery. Through Mizzi’s experiences, the film looks at unfair treatment, privilege and the effect of colonial rule. These parts give the story more weight, although they are sometimes introduced quickly while the film moves from one chase to another.

Enola remains the strongest part of the film. She still speaks directly to viewers, sharing her thoughts as she puts clues together. Her confidence has grown since the first film, but she is also shown facing adult decisions about love, family and the kind of life she wants.

Familiar faces return

Sherlock Holmes returns as Enola’s clever but distant brother. His disappearance is the main reason Enola enters the case, but when the siblings work together, their relationship gives the film some of its better moments.

Dr Watson has a larger role this time and becomes more than Sherlock’s assistant. He helps Enola understand parts of the case while also dealing with his own connection to Britain’s history.

Enola’s mother, Eudoria Holmes, also returns with her usual unpredictable energy. Her scenes add some lighter moments, especially when the film becomes serious.

Meanwhile, Lord Tewkesbury is not only there for romance. He is caught between his love for Enola and the pressure of his public role. His relationship with Enola is warm, although the wedding storyline sometimes feels pushed aside by the bigger mystery.

A more mature but crowded story

Enola Holmes 3 tries to grow with its main character. It is less focused on schoolgirl adventure and more interested in Enola’s future as a detective and a woman making her own choices.

The film has exciting chases, beautiful Malta locations and enough clues to keep viewers guessing. However, the mystery can feel crowded because it carries romance, family drama, politics and history all at once.

Still, the film remains an easy watch for fans of the series. It may not be the strongest chapter in the franchise, but Enola’s courage, sharp mind and refusal to follow other people’s rules continue to make her an enjoyable detective to follow.
