Millie Odhiambo warns gangster culture in Kenya will haunt the country

Suba North Member of Parliament Millie Odhiambo has voiced her concerns with recent events in which unidentified individuals have been linked to raids at homes and business premises owned by prominent Kenyan politicians.

The lawmaker faulted authorities for tolerating the individuals behind the raids, calling them gangsters and raising the alarm over the trend.

In a statement posted on Facebook on Thursday, March 12, 2026, the legislator noted that tolerating the gangster culture will one day haunt the country, expressing her fears for the worst.

“The rise of Gangster culture tolerated by authority will haunt Kenya,” she stated.

Millie Odhiambo: Kenya might soon need help like Haiti

She cited two recent raids conducted by unidentified individuals, noting that Kenya might soon be overrun by gangs, necessitating intervention from other nations.

“Soon, like Haiti, we might need other nations to assist us in dealing with gangsters,” she added.

She was referring to Kenya’s intervention in Haiti, which saw close to a thousand police officers deployed to the Caribbean nation to help its authorities fight armed gangs that had taken control of major installations and several regions.

For the longest time, the use of goons at political events has been an issue of concern.

Gangs, goons and politics in Kenya

Rival political outfits have in the past accused each other of deploying hired goons to disrupt political rallies in the country.

Despite calls for the trend to come to an end, the use of goons remains an issue of concern as the country heads to the next general election.

Activists and celebrities have increasingly cautioned the youth against being misused by politicians to pursue their agenda.

Rapper Henry Ohanga, popularly known as Octopizzo, is among those who have outrightly called out the culture of handouts and the youth being misused by politicians.

Handouts have unfortunately become a powerful political tool, especially among young people who deserve far more than temporary relief. When short-term cash is normalised, it creates dependency instead of dignity. The real turning point will come when our youth collectively say: we do not want handouts, we want structural change,” Octopizzo stated.

He urged Kenyans to outrightly reject handouts and pursue structural change that will have a meaningful impact on their lives.
