Lydia Wanjiru urges Kenyans to rethink social media love stories
By Paulette Mboga, April 22, 2026Content creator Lydia Wanjiru has urged the public to rethink how they view relationships shared online.
In a post on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, she explained that social media often shows only selected moments, which can create a false picture of love and stability. She said her experience with public dating shaped how she now understands relationships in the spotlight.
“I actually have mad respect for couples who date publicly. Mimi Karibu inimalize,” Lydia Wanjiru said.
She said dating in public comes with pressure that many people do not see. She explained that online attention and constant opinions can slowly affect a relationship. She added that outside voices can interfere and create tension between partners over time.

“Nyinyi tu followers ndio hubomoa hizo ndoa,” Lydia Wanjiru said.
“Through the things you write on bloggers in the name of tea or sliding into either one or both of their DMs wanting the same ‘treatment’ coz you believe one of them deserves better mnachokoranga hadi foundation inabomoka,” Lydia Wanjiru explained.
Reality behind public relationships
She also said that some relationships end for normal reasons. She explained that people grow and change, and not all relationships are meant to last. She added that this is common, even without public pressure.

“And sometimes, just like any others, inakataanga ku work out. You outgrow each other. Especially hizi relationships huanza na ‘humble beginnings’ ogopa,” Lydia Wanjiru said.
“They mostly don’t survive, or if they do, kuna mwenye aneamua kuwa fala and sweep everything under the rug, in the name of we’ve invested a lot together, we’ve been through a lot, I’m here for kids, kunanyeshanga everywhere…blah,” Lydia Wanjiru said.
She also addressed how relationships are presented online. She explained that people often share only what they want others to see. She added that this can create unrealistic expectations for those watching.
“STOP IDOLIZING CELEBRITY RELATIONSHIPS/MARRIAGES. People post what they want you to see,” Lydia Wanjiru said.
She said some couples also shape their image for business reasons. She explained that public displays of affection can sometimes be part of positioning for opportunities. She added that the reality behind the scenes can be very different.
“Worse is, when they need to position themselves for brand deals, kucheka na kukiss kwa camera then offline ni cat fights and tears,” Lydia Wanjiru said.
This comes after Njugush and Celestine Ndinda parted ways, mutually leaving most of their followers heartbroken.
