It is said that as you hang out, you go deeper. The phrase in layman’s language simply means that the more time you spend with someone or something, the more you get to know the other side that was hidden, and this has been the case with Senator Karen Nyamu.

Taking to her Facebook account on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, the nominated senator revealed and admitted that she learnt a lot of things about her children that she had not noticed before.

Nyamu said the experience came after she decided to go on vacation without a nanny, deliberately choosing to handle all parenting duties herself.

A no-nanny vacation

Nyamu explained that being fully present allowed her to enjoy moments that are often rushed or delegated.

“On vacation with no nanny. I wanted to be the one doing everything for them.

“The simple joy of carrying your child in a towel after a shower, then oiling and dressing them, picking outfits, and even struggling to match shoes.

“Taking them places and watching them be happy is so fulfilling,” Karen wrote on Facebook.

She added that the uninterrupted time together revealed sides of her children that rarely come out in the usual home setting.

According to her, the vacation created space for laughter, discovery and genuine connection.

“I’ve also noticed new sides of them that I don’t get to see at home,” Nyamu shared.

“Tami Tami is hilarious, tunacheka mbavu zinakauka. Teana is so classy and well-mannered, I even asked who taught her because it’s not me.

“Nimu naye is super smart, and she is surprising me with how much she knows,” Karen Nyamu said.

Lessons from vacation

Beyond sharing her personal experience, the senator used the moment to send a message to families, urging parents not to attach vacations to luxury or high costs.

She noted that meaningful family time does not have to involve expensive travel.

Vacations don’t have to be expensive. It can even be a visit to the village, but families should prioritise them,” she said.

Nyamu concluded by wishing her followers well as the new year approached, expressing hope and positivity as families step into 2026.
