Kenyan comedian Mannerson Akuku, popularly known as Akuku Danger, has opened up about one of the most painful moments of his life, revealing how a severe sickle cell battle left him believing he had died before returning to life.

Speaking during an interview on Sunday, 10 May 2026, on a podcast, the comedian gave an emotional account of what he experienced while admitted to the hospital during his long-term illness that nearly claimed his life.

What sickness does he have?

Akuku, who has lived with sickle cell disease since childhood, said the condition has shaped most of his life. He explained that growing up was difficult because he spent more time receiving treatment than enjoying a normal childhood.

The comedian recalled being hospitalised for months between 2021 and 2022 after his health worsened. It was during that period that he said he experienced what felt like death.

“I genuinely felt like I had left this world. There was no pain at all. Everything became quiet and peaceful,” he said during the interview.

According to him, he suddenly felt disconnected from his body and could see what was happening around him from another perspective.

“I could actually see people gathered around my hospital bed, but I was somewhere else watching everything happen,” he narrated.

How the experience changed him

Akuku added that the experience completely changed how he now views life and death. While many people fear dying, he described the moment as calm rather than frightening. He stated that at that moment, there was no fear, panic, or pain, just an unusual sense of peace and silence.

“When you are in that state, you are at peace. The pain is mostly for the people left behind,” he said.

The comedian also revealed that waking up again was not easy. After regaining consciousness, he reportedly struggled with memory loss to recognise some of his close family members.

“At some point, I could not even remember how I got to the hospital,” he revealed.

The experience, however, changed the way he looks at life. Akuku admitted that after surviving, he stopped putting pressure on himself over things beyond his control and instead focused on living each day as it comes.

Despite the painful experiences, Akuku Danger continues to inspire many through his resilience, choosing to keep entertaining fans while managing a condition that has tested him for most of his life.
