Gospel singer Rachel Wandeto dies following petrol attack in Mwiki

The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, has announced the death of gospel singer Rachel Wandetto, who passed away this morning while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital following a brutal acid attack in Nairobi’s Mwiki area.

In his statement, on his official X page on Monday, May 18, 2026, the CS expressed deep sorrow over the incident and strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a result of intolerance and hatred.

“I am profoundly saddened to learn of the demise of Ms Rachel Wandeto, which happened this morning at the Kenyatta National Hospital following a heinous attack by a vile and intolerant group of people,” he said.

He further noted that no one should be targeted for their political beliefs or expressions. “Her passing is deeply disturbing. No one deserves to be injured or killed for their political views or affiliation in this day and age. It should prick the conscience of those propagating politics of hate, violence, and division,” he added.

The CS also revealed that he had visited the late singer in the hospital, noting that she had shown courage despite her condition. “When I visited Rachel in the hospital last evening, her face showed resilience and courage. It is quite unfortunate that she lost the fight,” he said.

He extended condolences to the family, adding that government agencies would ensure those behind the attack are brought to justice. “We shall bring the perpetrators of this senseless act to book. Rachel will get justice. I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends for this painful loss. The government stands with you in this time,” he stated.

From attack to hospital admission

Rachel Wandetto, who had recently drawn public attention after tattooing President William Ruto’s face on her chest, had been rushed to the hospital after she was brutally attacked in Mwiki, Kasarani sub-county, where she sustained severe burns after being set on fire by unknown assailants.

She was initially rushed to Uzima Uhai Hospital before being transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised treatment after suffering burns said to cover nearly 75 per cent of her body.

Before her passing, gospel singer and philanthropist Karangu Muraya had appealed for blood donations to support her treatment as medics prepared for surgery. “Hey friends, I have received an urgent call from KNH regarding our sister Rachel Wandeto. She urgently needed a blood transfusion ahead of surgery,” Muraya had shared in an emotional appeal.

Despite efforts by medical teams and support from well-wishers, she did not survive.

Investigation into motive continues

The National Police Service and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have since launched investigations into the incident. Preliminary reports suggested the attack could be linked to political intolerance, though authorities have said they are still working to establish the exact motive and identify those responsible.

The death of Wandeto has since drawn widespread condemnation, with calls for swift justice and an end to politically motivated violence dominating public reactions.
