Comrades at The University of Embu have held an emotional candle-lighting ceremony in honour of Juja content creator Derrick Omollo, with students gathering at night to remember the young TikToker whose life was cut short in a tragic quarry accident.

The emotional gathering on Saturday, September 5, 2026, saw a large number of students assemble at the school grounds, where they lit candles and held them high as they sang sad songs in memory of the late content creator.

The students stood together in the darkness, with the glow from the candles illuminating the grounds as emotions ran high during the tribute.

One of the students led the candle-lighting session as the comrades raised their candles above their heads and continued singing in honour of Omollo.

The students later switched on the torches on their mobile phones, raising them into the night sky as they continued with the emotional singing and paid tribute to the young content creator.

What happened to Derrick Omollo

Derrick Omollo died after falling into a quarry while attempting to escape from a group of attackers who had confronted him and his friends.

The circumstances of his death were revealed by his friend and fellow TikToker Mildred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, as she confirmed that Omollo had been with four other people when tragedy struck.

Mildred said the five friends had been out for a walk when they were attacked, forcing them to flee in different directions as they attempted to escape.

According to Mildred, Omollo ran towards the quarry while trying to get away from the people who had attacked the group.

“To those who do not know what happened, after confirming from various sources, yes, it is true. They were attacked by thugs and they tried escaping, and that is how he fled on the quarry side and died,” Mildred said.

She further explained that Omollo had not been alone when the incident occurred, saying he was accompanied by four other people.

“They were five people. They were out for a walk when they were attacked. They all tried to escape and Derrick escaped to the quarry,” she said.

The account painted a grim picture of how an ordinary outing with friends suddenly turned into a desperate attempt to flee, ultimately ending in Omollo’s death.

News of his death left fellow content creators mourning a young man whose online presence had been growing rapidly.

Fellow TikToker Leo described Omollo as a champion while paying tribute to him and recalling how quickly he had built his audience on the platform.

“That was a champion. Rest in peace, Omollo,” Leo said.

Leo revealed that Omollo had grown his TikTok following from about 1,000 followers to 100,000 in only four months, highlighting the remarkable pace at which his content had attracted viewers.

“The guy made it from 1K followers. He was so creative. He rose to 100K followers within only four months,” Leo said.

The rapid growth had marked Omollo out as one of the promising young content creators building a sizeable audience through social media, making the sudden end to his journey particularly painful for those who had watched him grow.

Leo also sent condolences to Omollo’s family, friends and the wider community following his death.

“JKUAT and family and friends, we send our condolences. It is a sad morning,” he said.
