Eric Omondi blames negligence and corruption for deadly Nairobi floods
Stand-up comedian and philanthropist Eric Omondi has blamed negligence and corruption among leaders for the deadly floods that recently hit Nairobi.
In a video shared on his official Instagram account on Sunday, March 8, 2026, Omondi revealed that he spent the entire day visiting flood-prone areas across the city to understand why residents continue to lose their lives whenever heavy rains hit the capital.
According to Omondi, at least 25 people lost their lives in the latest flooding incident, raising concerns about the city’s preparedness and infrastructure.
“Today I visited all the Flood Hot Spots in Nairobi to try and figure out what the Problem is and what are the possible Solutions. I have spent the whole day in Nairobi city to try and find out kwa nini watu wanakufa; every year we must lose people. This Friday, we lost 25 people. What is the cause, and what is the solution?” Omondi disclosed.
In addition, the comedian added that the main causes of the recurring floods are poor drainage systems and garbage blocking water channels across the city.

“The cause is very simple: drainage and garbage,” he added.
Omondi further blamed what he described as negligence and corruption among leaders for failing to address the long-standing problem despite repeated tragedies.
He, however, expressed hope that the situation can change if leaders take responsibility and implement proper waste management and drainage improvements.
“As usual, the Problem is Negligence and Corruption from Leaders but that will soon be a thing of the past. There will be a new Kenya,” Omondi stated.
Floods in Nairobi
Omondi’s concerns come as, on Friday, March 6, 2026, the heavy downpour caused motorists to wade through waterlogged roads and cars partially submerged in floodwaters, highlighting the scale of disruption caused by the rains.
The flooding caused massive traffic jams in key areas within the Nairobi Metropolitan, disrupting the Friday evening commutes.

Apart from road closures, the Kenya Red Cross disclosed, the ongoing heavy rains have caused property damage, displacement, and distress among affected communities.
“Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in several parts of Nairobi and surrounding areas, leading to road closures, property damage, displacement and distress among affected communities. Affected areas include Pipeline & Embakasi (Kware Road cut off), Mukuru (Kwa Njenga, Reuben, Viwandani), Kibra, Mathare, Huruma, Baba Dogo, Bosnia, South B & South C, and Nairobi West,” the Kenya Red Cross statement reads.
“Lang’ata, Umoja 3, Chokaa, Njiru, Ruai, Utawala, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Githurai, Loresho and parts of Westlands. Major roads affected: Sections of CBD roads, Uhuru Highway, Mbagathi Way, Mombasa Road (South C–JKIA Exit–Kyumbi), Thika Superhighway (Githurai–Kahawa Sukari), Jogoo Road, Lunga Lunga Road, Enterprise Road and Lang’ata Road near T-Mall.
