In a moment that perfectly blended football passion and pop stardom, singer Ed Sheeran joined Ipswich Town players and staff in the Portman Road dressing room to perform his hit song“The A Team” as the club celebrated their immediate return to the Premier League on Saturday, May 2, 2026.

The 4-time Grammy winner, a lifelong Ipswich supporter and minority shareholder, was front and centre as the Tractor Boys sealed automatic promotion with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the Championship season.

Ipswich finished second with 85 points, bouncing straight back to the top flight after just one season away.

Dressing room party

After the final whistle, Sheeran was seen soaking in the atmosphere on the pitch with fans, friends, and family. But the celebrations moved behind closed doors, where the mood turned into a full dressing room party.

Inside, Sheeran led players and staff in an emotional singalong of his 2011 breakout hit.

Videos shared on social media showed manager Kieran McKenna and the squad joining in as the singer played guitar and celebrated the club’s achievement.

“It’s amazing to experience it with my friends and family,” Sheeran told the BBC on the pitch. He also described himself as “super happy” with the club’s promotion success.

Sheeran’s strong bond with Ipswich

Sheeran’s connection to Ipswich Town goes far beyond music. He has supported the club since childhood and became a minority stakeholder in 2024.

He has also been a shirt sponsor and a regular presence at Portman Road, even during difficult seasons.

His involvement has been a constant source of encouragement for the team, especially under manager Kieran McKenna, who has guided the club through a remarkable rise in recent years.

The promotion marks another major step in Ipswich’s transformation under McKenna. The club has now achieved multiple promotions in a short period, moving from lower league football back into the Premier League.
