Comedian Nyambane reflects on brief but memorable 2022 presidential run

Comedian Walter Mongare, popularly known as Nyambane and a former Redykyulass star, has opened up about his brief but memorable attempt to run for president in Kenya’s 2022 General Election, describing it as both inspiring and humbling.
Speaking during a segment on Engage Talk on Saturday, April 4, 2026, Nyambane reflected on the events leading up to his presidential bid, revealing that his decision to enter the race was largely driven by encouragement from young people.
According to him, a group of about 300 youth convinced him that he could transition from satire to real leadership, urging him to offer an alternative voice in the country’s political landscape.
“I thought it was time to move from acting leadership to actually living it,” he said.
In May 2022, Nyambane presented his papers to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and was initially cleared to contest.
He recalled the moment as surreal, noting that he instantly began to experience the privileges and responsibilities that come with being a presidential candidate, including a security detail and heightened public attention.
“For a moment, everything changed. I was now being treated as a real presidential candidate,” he recalled.
Revocation and reflection
However, the excitement was short-lived. Just days later, the commission revisited his application and announced the revocation of his candidacy.

Nyambane recounted watching the announcement unfold publicly, comparing the experience to a biblical moment of judgment and reflection.
He described the withdrawal of support from security personnel to political allies as symbolic of the “stones” people face in life when circumstances suddenly change.
Drawing from scripture, Nyambane likened his experience to the story of the woman caught in adultery in the Gospel of John, where accusers are challenged to examine their own faults before judging others.
He said the moment taught him about conscience, resilience, and the importance of staying grounded despite public scrutiny. “When everything was taken away, I understood what it means to be tested and to stand firm,” he added.
Beyond personal reflection, Nyambane emphasised that his presidential attempt was rooted in a desire to promote issue-based politics.

He called on Kenyans to shift focus from personalities to policies, arguing that meaningful national progress depends on honest conversations about the country’s challenges.
Despite the setback, Nyambane remains optimistic, stating that the experience strengthened his resolve to contribute to society in different ways.
He encouraged young people to pursue their ambitions fearlessly, even in the face of rejection.
