‘Usisahau ulikotoka’-KRG hits back at Jalang’o over advice against monthly salaries

Musician KRG The Don has hit back at Lang’ata Member of Parliament Jalang’o over his recent advice to employed Kenyans not to accept being paid only 12 times a year.

In an interview on Saturday, September 26, 2026, KRG told the MP not to forget where he came from, reminding him that he also earned a salary while working in radio before venturing into politics.

KRG questioned the message being passed to young Kenyans, particularly those from humble backgrounds who may not have money to start businesses immediately.

“Usisahau ulikotoka,” KRG said, before pointing out that Jalang’o had only recently been earning a salary in radio.

“Juzi tu alikuwa analipwa mshahara. Akaacha radio ndio akaingia kwenye siasa,” he said.

According to KRG, young people without financial backing cannot simply abandon employment and start businesses without first having capital.

He argued that a salary can provide an important starting point for someone looking to become an entrepreneur.

KRG defends monthly salaries

KRG said young Kenyans should work, earn and save before using their savings to establish businesses.

“Kwa hiyo huwezi uka-advise tu vijana wasifanye kazi. Lazima vijana wafanye kazi ili watafute ganji,” he said.

He cited businesses such as boda boda and tuk-tuk ventures, taxis, and kiosks, saying they all require some form of capital to get started.

KRG added that having a job should not prevent someone from pursuing other sources of income.

Instead, he encouraged young people to use their salaries to build savings while looking for opportunities to invest and grow financially.

Jalang’o’s salary remarks

Jalang’o had advised employed Kenyans to look beyond their monthly salaries, arguing that a year has 365 days while salaried workers typically receive income only 12 times.

He encouraged people not to become too comfortable with employment and instead work towards creating additional income streams and building something of their own.

However, KRG said such advice should take into account the different circumstances of young Kenyans.

He argued that someone from a family without financial resources may need employment as they raise money to start a business.

“Fanya kazi unafanya kwa sababu ni mzuri sometimes kuwa sure kwamba mwezi ikikata, mi nitakuwa na pesa yangu ili niweze kulea familia,” he said.
