Shorn Arwa recalls begging for food, aunt chasing her away after losing both parents

Kenyan content creator and influencer Shorn Arwa has emotionally opened up about one of the darkest chapters of her childhood, revealing that she and her siblings were forced to beg relatives for food after losing both parents at a young age.
Speaking during the launch of her pink-themed lifestyle brand, “Unless They Kill God”, on Saturday, July 11, 2026, Shorn explained that the powerful slogan behind her brand was born from a painful experience she endured as a child rather than being just another motivational catchphrase.
Addressing guests at the launch, the influencer said many people often ask where the phrase came from, prompting her to share the heartbreaking story that has shaped the way she approaches life.
“I have the slogan ‘Unless They Kill God.’ I know it’s a boring story that everybody says, but you know how tough life gets,” she began.
Shorn revealed that she lost both her parents while she was still very young, although she admitted she cannot clearly remember her exact age at the time.
“I remember when my parents died. I don’t really remember whether I was four or five. I don’t remember,” she said.
She explained that after the deaths of her parents, life became extremely difficult for the family, forcing them to depend on relatives for basic necessities, including food.
According to Shorn, she and her siblings would frequently visit one of their aunts whenever they had nothing to eat, hoping she would help them survive.
“We would go to my aunt constantly asking for food,” she recalled.

However, as time went by, the repeated visits became a burden for the aunt, who eventually reached her breaking point.
Rather than welcoming them, Shorn said her aunt openly expressed frustration, telling the children that they needed to stop behaving as though hope had completely disappeared simply because their parents had died.
“And I understand her because she is human and maybe she was tired. One day she was like, ‘You children are too much. Stop being like it’s God who has died. It’s your parents. God has not died, so you guys will figure it out,'” Shorn recounted.
Although the words initially left her devastated, the content creator said they unexpectedly became one of the greatest life lessons she has ever received.
She revealed that from that day forward, she chose to view the statement differently, turning it into the personal philosophy that has carried her through every challenge she has faced.
“I said, damn. So it does not matter whether your parents have died. It does not matter whether you don’t qualify enough or whether people don’t support you. It does not matter, unless they kill God,” she said.
Shorn explained that the phrase constantly reminds her that as long as God remains in control, every new day presents another opportunity to keep pushing forward regardless of life’s setbacks.
“As long as there is God, you get a chance to wake up every morning and keep grinding. So I would tell myself, unless they kill God,” she added.
