Oga Obinna responds to claims Vurugu Boxing is his strategy to cash in on politicians
Media personality Oga Obinna has dismissed claims that his Vurugu Boxing event was designed as a strategy to position himself to benefit financially from politicians ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking to Milele FM presenter Tony Mwirigi, who was the red carpet host for the star-studded event held at the Sarit Expo Centre on Saturday, June 20, 2026, Obinna explained the motivation behind organising the boxing extravaganza and why politics was not the driving force behind the event.
He said financial opportunities from politicians could still come his way, but insisted that such opportunities would not be tied to Vurugu Boxing.
“They are saying your target is elections and so you can get money from politicians,” Tony Mwirigi asked.
“Well, money from politicians will still find its way to me. It does not even have to be on this Vurugu Boxing, no,” Obinna said.
He explained that politicians and other public figures already seek his services through his various media and creative platforms, making it unnecessary for him to create an event specifically to benefit from them.
“And why will I get that money? Because if they want to come and be interviewed on the biggest platform, they come to Obinna Show Live, they come to my studio,” he said.
Obinna added that his business extends beyond interviews, with leaders and organisations seeking his expertise in different areas of the creative industry.
“If they want to do live streams, event coverage strategy and planning, branding, marketing and publicity, they come to Obinna. So that is how I will get the money, so it does not have to be through Vurugu,” he explained.

The media personality further clarified that the timing of Vurugu 2 was influenced by his birthday celebrations rather than political ambitions.
He said June was a special month for him and that he wanted to create an event to mark the occasion, just as he had done the previous year.
“The reason why it was on short notice was because June is my birthday month. So last year I did ‘My Mistakes’, which was a comedy show and music, so this year I was like, what do I do for my birthday as well?” he said.
Obinna explained that after reflecting on his previous events, he decided to bring back the boxing concept after successfully hosting the first edition of Vurugu.
“So I said let me do another event. So I realised that I did Vurugu 1 and I said let me do Vurugu 2,” he added.
He admitted that the preparation period for Vurugu 2 was shorter than ideal, revealing that the event was initially planned for a later date.
“I was actually supposed to do this Vurugu 2 in August, but I pushed it to come here to June. I know the planning time was not enough,” Obinna said.
Despite acknowledging the challenges that came with the short preparation period, he said the experience had provided lessons that would help improve future editions.
“But we learn. Let’s plan ourselves and do the Vurugu 3 in December,” he said.
The event featured high-profile clashes, including the celebrity showdown between Arrow Bwoy and Shakib Cham, where the Ugandan socialite emerged victorious by technical knockout.
