Muigai Wa Njoroge sends emotional appeal as Ol Kalou heads into tense by-election

As Ol Kalou Constituency braces for a high-stakes parliamentary by-election pitting the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) against the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), gospel singer Muigai wa Njoroge has issued an emotional appeal urging residents not to sacrifice peace because of politics.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, barely a day before voters head to the ballot, the celebrated musician reminded residents that while politicians and their campaign teams would eventually leave the constituency after the polls, the people of Ol Kalou would continue living together long after the election dust settles.

According to Muigai, political campaigns often attract outsiders who flood constituencies in support of various candidates, but once voting comes to an end, they return to their respective homes, leaving local residents to deal with the consequences of any violence or division that may have occurred.

“Hello Ol Kalou, I want to remind you of one small thing which is very important. All those people you have been seeing during the recent campaigns are visitors, and they will go back to their places once the vote is done tomorrow evening. You are the ones who will remain in Ol Kalou,” he said.

The singer urged residents not to allow political differences to destroy relationships that have taken years to build, warning that election-related violence would only leave neighbours nursing wounds, seeking treatment and mourning loved ones after politicians had moved on.

“If you fail to keep peace during these polls, you are the same people who will remain healing from injuries. If you hurt each other, you are the ones who will remain seeking hospitals. If you kill each other, you are the ones who will remain holding burials,” he cautioned.

Muigai also reminded voters that whichever candidate emerges victorious between the UDA and DCP contenders will eventually focus on their own political responsibilities and future ambitions, urging residents not to ruin their lives over leaders whose priorities would inevitably shift after the election.

“The MP you choose, whether he will be from DCP or UDA, knows that after getting elected, that leader will also focus on running his office, recovering campaign resources and preparing for future politics. But you will still remain neighbours,” he said.

Calling on residents to safeguard the unity of their constituency, the gospel singer appealed to them to reject political hatred, divisive rhetoric and inflammatory statements capable of tearing communities apart.

“Take care of your Ol Kalou because you don’t have another place you can call home. Remove politics from your heart because politics can be bad. Put aside bad utterances. We all need one another. May the best candidate win,” he added.

Muigai’s appeal comes as Ol Kalou prepares for one of the country’s most closely watched by-elections, with the contest widely viewed as an early political test ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of former MP David Njuguna Kiaraho, prompting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to schedule the by-election for Thursday, July 16, 2026.

The race has largely narrowed down to Samuel Muchina of the ruling UDA and Sammy Kamau Ngotho of DCP, the latter enjoying the backing of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Wilson Kigwa of the Jubilee Party is also in the race.

Campaigns officially ended on July 13, with the constituency witnessing heightened political activity, allegations of voter bribery and claims of possible electoral malpractice. While DCP leaders have raised concerns over alleged plans to manipulate the outcome, the IEBC has dismissed the accusations and assured residents that all preparations have been completed.

More than 73,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots across 144 polling stations, with security agencies deploying additional officers across the constituency in a bid to maintain peace throughout the exercise.
