Lydia Wanjiru shares why she dislikes birthday alcohol-pouring celebrations

On Friday, July 24, 2026, she said she does not like the practice and would rather leave than stay in such a situation. She explained that she does not see it as a sign of luxury.
“I know it’s your money, but if we ever go out and you start pouring alcohol on people (or yourself) because ‘it’s their birthday, ‘ washing your hands with liquor or rinsing phones with expensive alcohol… I’m leaving,” Lydia Wanjiru said.
She explained that everyone is free to spend their money as they wish, but she has no interest in taking part in such celebrations. She made it clear that the habit is not something she enjoys watching. She said she would choose to excuse herself instead.
“I genuinely find it so cringe,” Lydia Wanjiru said.
Birthday celebrations and luxury
Lydia Wanjiru went on to explain that she does not connect wasting expensive alcohol with luxury. She said buying a premium bottle only to pour it away does not impress her. She believes the purpose should be to enjoy the drink instead of wasting it.
“Maybe it’s an unpopular opinion, but buying a premium bottle only to pour it on the floor or over people doesn’t scream luxury to me. It comes across as performative, as if the goal is to prove you can afford to waste it rather than actually enjoy it,” Lydia Wanjiru explained.
She said her opinion may not be shared by everyone, but it reflects how she views such moments. She added that she would rather spend time with people who enjoy celebrations without wasting expensive drinks. She maintained that this is her personal view.
“If that’s your idea of flexing, I’ll respectfully excuse myself,” Lydia Wanjiru said.
Her remarks focused on how she sees birthday alcohol-pouring celebrations and why she chooses not to be part of them. She explained that she prefers a different way of celebrating and does not see value in pouring expensive liquor on people, objects, or the floor. She maintained that if such displays happen around her, she will simply leave instead of taking part.
