Koku Lwanga has opened up about her journey to rebuilding her self-esteem, saying she had to find her sense of self again after feeling unworthy and unlovable.

Lwanga reflected on her journey as she looked back on the year, saying she had made major progress in how she viewed herself. She explained that the process involved learning to love herself and appreciate the person she was becoming.

“Literally scrapped my self-esteem from the basement in a year. I felt like complete trash not so long ago. So unworthy. So unlovable. Until I started to remember I’m the love of my life,” Koku Lwanga said on Sunday, September 6, 2026.

She said her journey also involved accepting her body and celebrating it despite the flaws, trauma and hurt she had experienced. Lwanga explained that dressing differently was part of trying to fall in love with the body she was in.

Finding herself again

Lwanga said her wardrobe became a subject of discussion. She described those interpretations as misguided and said they did not reflect what she was going through at the time.

“What they didn’t see was me trying to fall in love with the body I was in. Finding my sense of self all over again. By dressing and celebrating it with all the flaws, the trauma, the hurt,” Koku Lwanga said.

She explained that she was trying to pull herself out of a difficult place while focusing on her personal journey. Instead, she said, the situation became fodder for gossip and vile accusations, leaving her angry about how her healing process was treated.

“I was literally pulling myself out of the trenches. Instead of leaving me alone in my journey to becoming, it became fodder for gossip and vile accusations, Nkt! Nilikasirika aki,” Koku Lwanga said.

Lwanga also expressed gratitude to God for helping her through the journey and said she had come to understand how much she was loved. She said the trip was a love letter to herself as she continued working on her relationship with herself.

She ended her reflection with a strong message to those she felt had directed negativity towards her, while reaffirming her gratitude for how far she had come.

“Thank you, God. As I close out this year, as I look back, I am truly your Pikin. For real, for real. You love me so much. Set my feet upon the rock. I am so grateful,” Koku Lwanga said.
