Moyes explains why Everton deserved to frustrate Manchester United

Everton manager David Moyes labelled his side’s dramatic late comeback as a deserved result following a chaotic finish against Manchester United.
Debutant Ainsley Maitland-Niles struck deep in stoppage time to salvage a point for the Toffees in a thrilling encounter that ended in a 2-2 draw at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
Speaking afterwards, the veteran coach admitted that his charges deserved to get something out of the encounter.
“You don’t plan as a manager to equalise in the last minute, but I thought the boys were amazing to keep running,” Moyes told Sky Sports. “We did well to ride their pressure, and we got a great finish at the end. When we got back to 1-1, I think we fully deserved it.”
The match delivered late drama after substitute Benjamin Šeško appeared to have secured all three points for the visitors with an 87th-minute header. However, that proved to be just the prelude to a frantic finale.
Everton, having already equalised minutes prior, saved their best for last as Maitland-Niles rifled home in the dying embers of stoppage time, sending the home crowd at the Hill Dickinson Stadium into raptures.
“The first goal we conceded was shabby,” Moyes admitted. “But I felt if anyone was going to go on and win the game after we equalised, it would be us. I set out to win.”

Despite the late jubilation, the Everton boss was measured in his post-match assessment, emphasising that his expectations remain higher when playing at home.
“Giving the crowd those moments is huge,” he added. “But I wanted to win, and I thought we were capable of it. I need to be winning my home games.”
The result leaves Everton with five points from their opening three fixtures.
The Toffees kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace but have since shown a knack for late rescue acts, coming from behind in back-to-back matches. They relied on a late James Tarkowski strike to rescue a point against Bournemouth on matchday 2 before repeating the trick against Michael Carrick’s Manchester United side.
The draw marked Moyes’ tenth against his former employers, though United maintain their historically dominant record against the Blues, having beaten Everton over 20 times in Premier League history.
