Sheryl Gabriella admits money changed the way people treated her family at father’s burial

Kenyan TikToker Sheryl Gabriella has revealed how she believes her family’s treatment changed after she started making money, recalling her father’s burial and the way people interacted with them compared with the days when they had little.
Sheryl’s father, Joseph Kipkoech Mutai, died on August 8, 2026, before being laid to rest a week later on August 15.
Speaking about his burial on TikTok live on Sunday, September 6, 2026, Sheryl said she wished her followers had accompanied her to the funeral so they could have witnessed firsthand how differently she and her family were treated because she now had some money.
“I wish you guys had followed me to my dad’s burial and seen how well I was being treated because I had small, small money,” Sheryl said.
She went on to draw a sharp contrast between the treatment her family received after she became financially successful and how they were treated in the past when they did not have money.
“The way they were treating us is not the same way they treated us way back when we did not have money. They were not treating us the same but the treatment changed because we now have little money,” she said.
Sheryl’s remarks offer a glimpse into the complicated emotions surrounding her father’s funeral, which attracted considerable attention online even as she mourned the loss of a close family member.
She further recalled arriving at the burial in a Toyota TX, a detail that appeared to underline the change in her circumstances and the financial progress she has experienced through her work as a digital creator.
“I remember I went to my dad’s burial in a Toyota TX,” she said.

The remarks come against the backdrop of a funeral that became a subject of intense discussion on social media, particularly because of the limited number of fellow content creators who attended the send-off.
Although a handful of Sheryl’s close friends and fellow creators travelled to stand by her during the difficult period, the wider TikTok community was largely absent from the burial.
The relatively low turnout became even more noticeable because of Sheryl’s prominent position within Kenya’s online entertainment space, where she has built a substantial following and interacted with numerous fellow creators.
The absence of many creators also came shortly after Sheryl had appealed to her followers and fellow content creators for financial assistance to help meet expenses related to her father’s funeral.
Her fundraising appeal, however, became embroiled in controversy after some Kenyans revisited her previous social media posts in which she had spoken about the money she earned from brand endorsements.
