‘Huyu ni nani? I hate you!’: TID shares the story behind the viral boda boda meme

Tanzanian musician TID has opened up about the story behind the viral “Huyu ni nani? Who is this Guy? Why, between my interview, you are passing around! I hate you! meme, revealing that the outburst was completely unplanned and happened after a boda boda rider interrupted him during an interview.

Speaking during an interview with media personality Oga Obinna on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, TID explained that the now-famous moment came after an exhausting day of media appearances and was never staged.

Never planned

According to the singer, he had spent the entire day giving interviews to dozens of journalists and bloggers, in addition to attending a press conference. After wrapping up another interview at Wasafi TV, he was approached by yet another blogger outside the station.

“Nimetoka kufanya interview the whole day na kama bloggers 30, zaidi ya journalists 20 na press conference. Niliongea sana, nguvu inatoka,” TID recalled.

He said that while speaking to the blogger, a boda boda rider suddenly passed by, interrupting the interview and prompting his now-famous reaction.

“Natoka kwenye Wasafi TV, outside nakutana na blogger mwingine anataka kuni-interview, halafu in between that some bullshit boda boda guy anapita tu. Na wewe umechoka siku nzima. It was not even planned,” he said.

TID said his frustration was genuine and simply reflected how exhausted he was after a long day.

“Kweli alipata because the whole world knew that I was mad at him. Watu walijua kabisa huu jamaa amekasirika. Ni kwa nini ananifanyia hivi?” he said.

When asked whether he feared backlash from boda boda riders after the clip went viral, TID admitted he initially thought about it but later believed many of them simply enjoyed the attention.

“Ya, ni kweli boda boda they’re crazy, but to me I thought it was probably more than that. Like, unajua hiyo wamefurahia. Wanaona kama nimewafanyia promotion hivyo,” he said.

Changed TID’s career

Despite becoming one of East Africa’s most recognisable viral moments, TID said he never expected the clip to spread so widely.

“Kusema ukweli, I didn’t expect that to go viral. Na hivyo ilivyoenda viral, it didn’t just put me there. It also created like another bar of me,” he said.

According to the veteran musician, the unexpected publicity opened doors beyond music, earning him commercial endorsements, advertising campaigns, hosting opportunities, MC gigs and promotional work.

“Hii jamaa sasa anafanya commercials, anafanya matangazo, anapata kazi nyingi. Hata kuimba, hata kuwa promoter, hata kuwa MC, hata kuhost. Vitu vingi vimeongezeka,” he said.

TID added that the viral attention also benefited his music career by reminding fans about his catalogue and boosting activity on his music distribution platforms.

Reflecting on the experience, the singer said the viral moment proved that any publicity can have its advantages.

“Publicity is publicity. Hata ikiwa negative, it’s publicity, he concluded.
