Dora Obwaka celebrates 3 years sober, opens up about her journey

Dora shared the milestone on Thursday, August 27, 2026, revealing that she had initially hesitated to make her experience public because of how personal the journey was.
“Celebrating 3 Years Sober!! (18 August),” she wrote.
She explained that she had recorded the message a few days earlier but spent time contemplating whether to share it with her followers.
However, she ultimately decided to post it in the hope that her story could encourage someone currently struggling with addiction or standing at a similar crossroads.
“I recorded this a few days ago and contemplated whether I would post or not, but for the sake of someone who is in the position I was then and may benefit from hearing this, I decided to go ahead and share this very personal lesson,” she said.
How her life changed
Looking back at her journey, Dora said she is grateful that she chose to walk away from what had become familiar to her, even though stepping into an uncertain future was uncomfortable.
“Looking back, I’m so glad I stepped away from what felt familiar and good into the unknown because three years later my life has completely changed because of that one uncomfortable decision!” she said.
She ended her message with words of encouragement, signing off: “Love & Light!”
Past battle with addiction
Dora has previously been open about her battle with alcohol and substance addiction, a struggle she said began when she was 17.
In a 2025 interview, she revealed that what started as drinking eventually developed into a full-blown addiction that lasted about seven years. She also spoke about the difficulty of repeatedly trying to stay sober before finally making a lasting change.
Her earlier accounts have also detailed how she progressed from alcohol to cigarettes and marijuana before becoming dependent on stronger substances. Her addiction affected her relationships, education and health, eventually leading her to seek rehabilitation.
Dora has credited her family, faith and the decision to change her environment and relationships as important parts of her recovery.
In November 2018, she entered a faith-based rehabilitation programme, Teen Challenge, after reaching what she described as a low point in her battle with addiction. She later completed the programme and began rebuilding her life.
From addiction to ‘Jesus Girl’
Following her recovery, Dora became known as Jesus Girl, a name that reflects the Christian faith that has become central to her life and public testimony.
She has since used her experiences to encourage people struggling with addiction and to remind families not to give up on loved ones battling substance use.
In a previous message, she described her transformation as a testimony from “death to life” and encouraged people who had lost hope to believe that recovery was possible.
Her latest milestone adds another chapter to that journey.
For Dora the three-year sobriety anniversary is not simply a personal achievement but an opportunity to encourage someone who may currently be struggling with addiction to make the difficult decision to seek a different path.
