Beyond the presidency: A look at Samia Suluhu Hassan and Hafidh Ameir’s 4 children

Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s name is closely linked to history as the country’s first female Head of State, but away from the political stage, she is also a mother who has raised a family with her husband, Hafidh Ameir.
The couple, who got married in 1978, have four children, three sons and one daughter. According to a profile by The East African, Samia has always kept her personal life private, with only her daughter Wanu Hafidh Ameir taking a visible path in politics.
Hafidh Ameir, an agriculturalist by profession, has also maintained a low public profile despite becoming Tanzania’s first First Gentleman after Samia assumed office in 2021.
A family raised away from the political spotlight
Before becoming president, Samia Suluhu Hassan spent years building her career in public service while raising her children alongside her husband.
According to information shared by the Tanzania Embassy in Tel Aviv, Samia married Hafidh Ameir in 1978, and the couple was blessed with four children who are Ameir, Abdul, Ahmed and Wanu Hafidh Ameir.
Despite their mother’s rise through Tanzania’s political ranks, the family has largely maintained a private lifestyle. Unlike some political families where children often become public figures, Samia and Hafidh’s sons have mostly stayed away from public attention.
The limited information available about the three sons reflects the family’s preference to separate personal life from their mother’s demanding political career. Their sister Wanu, however, chose a different path by entering public service.
Wanu Hafidh Ameir: Following her mother’s political footsteps
Wanu Hafidh Ameir is the most publicly known of Samia and Hafidh’s children. Born in 1982, she followed her mother’s footsteps into politics and became a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
Wanu is a Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) politician and has served as a representative in Zanzibar and she is a lawyer by profession, having earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Open University of Tanzania.
Her political journey has placed her in the public eye, especially because of her connection to President Samia. However, Wanu has also built her own career through leadership and public service.
Three sons who have chosen privacy
While Wanu has embraced a public role, Samia and Hafidh’s three sons have remained largely outside politics and media attention.
Reports about the president’s family consistently identify the couple as parents of three sons and one daughter, with Wanu being the only child who has followed a political path.
The quieter lives of the three sons highlight the family’s approach of keeping personal matters away from the presidency. While their mother continues to shape Tanzania’s political history, they have largely chosen to pursue their own journeys away from the public spotlight.
