Zachary Mburu, a senior manager, law enforcement liaison officer at Safaricom PLC, has tendered his evidence of call data of mobile numbers in the murder of Rex Kanyike Masai during the anti-finance bill protests.

Appearing before Milimani Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo on Monday, September 15, 2025, Mburu informed the court that they received court orders requesting them to provide call data of three cell phone numbers for the dates June 18, 2024, and June 19, 2024.

According to the information extracted from Safaricom systems, two of the numbers were registered under the main suspect, Officer Isaiah Murangiri Ndumba; another one was registered under Benson Kamau; and another one was registered under Micheal Oginga Okelo.

“In terms of registration particulars, we established through extraction that 0715* (number withheld) is registered under Benson Kamau, and 0728* (number withheld), the registration details for that number as per record, is Isaiah Murangiri Ndumba,” Manager Mburu told the court.

Notably, he revealed to the court that he found out that the cell phone number 0746* (number withheld) was also registered under officer Isaiah Murangiri Ndumba, and 0704* (number withheld) was registered under Micheal Oginga Okelo; however, Okelo’s number did not have any call data.

Further, he noted that Murangiri’s two numbers had only call data for June 18, 2024, adding that they did not get any call data from his numbers for June 19, 2024.

The manager also noted that the call data on June 20, 2024, places Murangiri within the Central Business District (CBD).

“On June 20, 2024, for Isaiah Murangiri, number 0728, he was serviced by St. Elis until 1945 hours, where he was serviced by Kencom cite, and then at 2011 hours by St. Elis cite,” Manager Mburu submitted to court.

“Those locations are the locations for the cites that were serving him, so it basically means that he was in that vicinity on June 20, 2024,” Mburu added.

It is also worth noting that on September 1, 2025, the trial took a dramatic turn after a police witness failed to identify the main suspect, Corporal Isaiah Murangiri, in photos tabled in court

Old number

During cross-examination, lawyer David Mwangi, representing the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), asked manager Mburu if it was possible for a number used a year ago to be active and in the call data system.

“We were told here in open court by a person named Isaiah Murangiri, whom your data shows is the bearer of the same phone number stated before this court, that he had seized using this phone number. Is it possible for this line to have not been used by the registered owner and been discarded a year before June 20, 2024, and yet still been active?” lawyer Mwangi asked.

In his response, Manager Zachary stated that he only produced what the court had ordered him to.
