Police arrests 4 people, recover rifle in Nakuru shooting

Detectives have arrested four persons of interest in connection with the shooting that happened in Free Area, Nakuru Town.
Police have also recovered an AK-47 rifle suspected to have been used to commit crimes.
According to police, one cop attached to Bondeni Police Station has succumbed to injuries, while two other colleagues were injured and are receiving treatment at Nakuru Level Five Hospital.
“Josphat Ruto was shot in the pelvic area, and the bullet exited on the left, breaking his left foot ankle. He was rushed to PGH hospital, where he succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment due to excessive bleeding,” the police statement read.
One of the officers was also attacked by a machete in the ambush on Monday, June 2, 2025, morning.
“Immediately, shooting began, whereby the following officers were injured. Saul Mutoro was injured on the right hand by a panga, sustained injury, and was treated and discharged in a stable condition, ”police said.
“Walter Makori was shot in the back, and the bullet exited at the stomach. He has been admitted in a serious condition.”
The group of officers had responded to a distress call when they were ambushed at about 1 am on Monday, June 2, 2025, police said.
A hunt for more persons of interest is ongoing.
“During the shootout, one robber was shot and escaped with injuries, police are in hot pursuit of another robber who injured Mutoro on the right hand. He was pursued by other officers in a land cruiser and managed to arrest him with a panga, which is kept as an exhibit,” police said.
“Another suspect believed to have been with the robbers at Gilgil Bar was also arrested after being identified by a public member as having been in company with the robbers before they left towards the Freehold area where the incident occurred.”

Nakuru insecurity bane
The area is experiencing a slight rise in crime amid operations to contain the trend.
Officials said more personnel have been sent to the area to hunt for the gang behind the trend.
Police said the recovered rifle will be subjected to ballistic tests for more information on whether it has been involved in a crime.
Police said the persons of interest are under intense interrogation for more information on possible accomplices.
Detectives are blaming the attacks on a gang on the loose and hope to get them all soon.
Last week, a 25-year-old man was shot and killed during a robbery mission at an M-Pesa shop in the Baraka area, Menengai, Nakuru County.
An M-Pesa attendant was also hit and injured before being robbed of Ksh40,000 in the Wednesday night incident.
The deceased was identified as Enock Chepkwony, who was a herder in the Arap Chumo area, police said.
Police said they were called and informed of the robbery and shooting before visiting the scene.
It was discovered that a gang of three had attacked an M-Pesa attendant and injured her in the face and left arm while demanding the day’s collection.
They grabbed Ksh40,000 from her shop before fleeing the scene.
It was then that they bumped into Chepkwony a few meters ahead and shot him at close range using a rifle that they were armed with.
Police said he was shot in the head, and the bullet exited through the cheek.
He was shot on the left side of the back, and the bullet exited on the right side of the cheek.
One spent cartridge of 7.62 mm special was recovered at the scene, police said.
The attendant was rushed to the hospital while the body of the man was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and investigations.
Police said they are investigating murder and robbery with violence.
