Naivasha: Shock as man poisons his 2 children before taking his own life

Residents of Mai Mahiu in Naivasha are struggling to come to terms with a horrific incident in which a man killed his two children by poisoning them before taking his own life by hanging.

The man, who was in his late twenties, gave the two children poisoned porridge at his home in Duka Moja, Narok, before hanging himself following a disagreement with his wife.

Emotions ran high at the home as friends and relatives tried to come to terms with the loss of the two minors.

According to the mother, Mary Karuku, her estranged husband arrived at their home while she was away and took the children to an unknown location.

She said she reported the matter to the Mai Mahiu Police Station later in the evening after her husband failed to return the children or answer her calls.

“The following day, I decided to travel to his home after his phone went off, only to find that he had killed my two babies and taken his own life,” she said.

With tears flowing down her cheeks, the mother of two spoke of the pain and agony she was going through as she prepared to lay her children to rest.

“I do not know where to start. I am appealing to our leaders and people of goodwill to help me bury my children,” she said.

Her aunt, Dorcas Njeri, said they were still trying to come to terms with the deaths of the minors, aged six and four, respectively.

She narrated how she had received a call from her niece about the missing children, only for them to be found dead the following day.

“We are not sure why this man decided to kill innocent children whose lives had just begun, and we are in deep pain as we plan for their burial,” she said.

Former MCA Eunice Mureithi, who visited the family, described the incident as horrific and urged people facing family problems to speak out.

She noted that cases of violence and even murder had increased within families, adding that most of them could be resolved through dialogue and counselling.

“We understand that families are going through many challenges, but violence and murder will not solve anything. They only make matters worse,” she said.

A senior police officer from Duka Moja, who declined to be named, confirmed the incident and said the three bodies had been collected and taken to the Narok County Hospital Mortuary.
