Nairobi man dies in Mombasa police cell under mysterious circumstances
A non-governmental organisation has threatened to hold a demonstration across Mombasa County in efforts to compel the police to reveal the cause of death of a Nairobi resident who was found dead inside the central police station cells in Mombasa County.
Vocal Africa activist Walid Sketty has termed the death of 26-year-old Simon Warui, a father to a three-year-old child, as yet another case of extrajudicial killing of an innocent Kenyan in the hands of police officers.
Sketty spoke on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH) mortuary, where the body of the deceased underwent a postmortem exercise.
“The deceased was reported missing on September 14, 2025, from his Nairobi Umoja estate is another case of police killing, where police are involved,” he said.
It remains unknown who arrested him from his Embakasi home, how he was ferried to Mombasa and what offence he was arrested for.
“As a family and an organisation, we suspect foul play from the side of the police, and a cover up for his death since they have declined to release the CCTV footage of the alleged day, further they are yet to reveal the contents of the occurrence book( OB) what he had be booked for and for what offense, ” Sketty stated.

Sketty added that the family was informed of his death on Thursday, September 18, 2025, three days after his death.
” Human rights defenders want answers regarding his death and a detailed report on who reported the matter. Some of his personal items, for instance, his mobile phone, are also missing,” he narrated.
Petition the police
Vocal Africa will be moving to court to invoke the powers of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and demand the immediate arrest of the officers at the Central Police Station.
“Although IPOA has taken over the matter, we have no faith in it,” Sketty noted
According to the deceased’s friend, he claims that they were informed of his arrest by an unknown person; however, upon arrival in Mombasa, they were picked up by the Director of Criminal Investigations Officers (DCIO), who took them to the central police station, where the deceased was reported to have died.
According to a postmortem report conducted at the CGTRH, dated September 18, 2025, it indicates that Warui died of cardio-respiratory collapse due to fracture dislocation of the neck, consistent with a fall from a height.
The postmortem has further revealed that Warui had a ligative mark measuring 3mm wide, an irregular mid scalp wound measuring 5 cm running anteroposteriorly, and a fractured vertebra.
Additionally, he suffered dislocation of C7-TI, fractured TI vertebra neck ligament, and spinal haemorrhage among other injuries.
In the post-mortem request made by police constable Kevin Sawe, it was stated that the body of the deceased was found lying with blood oozing from the nose while on the floor of the washroom.
