Kisumu: 2 armed robbers lynched as police launch manhunt for others

By , July 28, 2025

A daylight robbery attempt turned deadly in Kondele, Kisumu County, after two armed robbers were lynched by an irate mob on Monday, July 28, 2025, afternoon, police confirmed.

The persons of interest were part of a five-man gang that targeted a resident, but their crime was cut short when members of the public responded swiftly and violently.

According to police reports, the gang had just carried out the attempted robbery when the crowd descended on them. Two of them were caught and beaten to death on the spot, while three others managed to escape and are currently being pursued by the sleuths.

Confirming the incident, Kisumu Central Deputy OCPD Mwanauli Bakari condemned the mob justice and urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands.

“We are appealing to members of the public to allow the police to do their work. Killing suspects interferes with investigations and denies us the chance to dismantle broader criminal networks,” Bakari said.

Recovered items

Police at the scene recovered several stolen items believed to have been taken during the attempted robbery, including a 55-inch black LG television set and other valuables.

The bodies of the deceased duo were taken to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue as investigations continue.

Bakari reiterated the importance of community cooperation with law enforcement in addressing crime, warning that mob justice not only jeopardises ongoing cases but also risks punishing innocent individuals.

“Our focus is on bringing all criminals to justice, but this must be done through proper legal channels,” he added.

The incident has sparked fresh debate over rising insecurity in Kisumu and the growing trend of mob justice, particularly in densely populated urban neighbourhoods like Kondele.

As police intensify their search for the remaining persons of interest, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in the ongoing probe.
