Several gang members in Haiti have been arrested and others killed after a fierce exchange with Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission forces on Monday, January 27, 2025.
In a statement on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, MSS revealed that the forces were responding to distress calls from residents of Kenscoff reporting imminent gang attacks.
“On Monday, January 27, 2025, distress calls from residents of Kenscoff reporting imminent gang attacks prompted a swift response from the MSS and PNH. Under the leadership of Acting Police Chief Normil Rameau and MSS Force Commander Godfrey Otunge, several gang members were arrested while others were fatally injured,” MSS stated.
MSS says a high-caliber firearm along with a communication radio were recovered during the operation.
“Residents of Kenscoff praised the security forces for their timely intervention. Today’s successful operation serves as a clear message to criminal gangs: the MSS will not allow them any room to operate. We extend our gratitude to the people of Kenscoff for their support and cooperation. The MSS remains committed to helping Haiti restore its former glory,” the statement added.
Haiti mission forces
This comes days after the MSS forces received a boost following the arrival of the Guatemalan contingent and the 3rd Kenyan contingent earlier this month.
“Haitians and the international community welcomed the arrival of the Guatemalan contingent and the 3rd Kenyan contingent earlier this month, signaling the growing strength of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission,” MSS stated.
According to MSS Force Commander Godfrey Otunge, the mission is entering a critical and decisive phase, requiring contributions and support from all stakeholders. He also issued a stern warning to key gang leaders, stating that their days were numbered.
“Over the past three weeks, the MSS and the Haitian National Police (PNH) have conducted multiple joint security operations to dismantle gangs. Operations in areas like Thomassin have led to the arrest of several gang members, with some sustaining fatal injuries during confrontations,” MSS added.
