Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Meru County have intercepted and impounded a lorry transporting 150 bags of what is believed to be government-subsidised fertiliser.

Speaking to K24 Digital on Monday, June 16, 2025, Meru County Commissioner Jacob Ouma confirmed the development and said investigations are ongoing to establish both the source and intended destination of the fertiliser.

According to Ouma, preliminary reports point to a possible case of theft, following the conduct of the lorry driver who fled after defying police orders along the Meru–Mikinduri road.

He said DCI officers on mobile patrol within the Mukinduri area in Tigania East intercepted a lorry bearing registration number KDC 091M, an Isuzu FRR model, which was being driven by a man identified as Tonny Mwenda.

“The driver was flagged down by officers but refused to stop, forcing them to pursue and block the vehicle,” the county commissioner said.

Upon being escorted to Meru Police Station, the driver declined to open the lorry.

While being directed to park the vehicle in the station yard, he jumped out and fled the scene.

The police have since launched a manhunt for the fleeing driver and are also pursuing leads to identify the owner of the vehicle.

The lorry and the fertiliser consignment are currently being held at Meru Police Station as investigations continue.
