Detectives rescue 56 victims of human trafficking in Embakasi

Operatives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended two human traffickers and rescued 56 victims during their recent raid in Embakasi,Nairobi County.

In a statement seen on Friday, July 12, 2024, detectives from the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) arrested two suspects Jilo and Galgalo at a residential building in Tassia, Embakasi sub-county.

“Detectives from the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) domiciled at the DCI headquarters have apprehended two human traffickers and rescued 56 victims. Dakie Jilo, 30, and Salat Galgalo, 20 were apprehended in Tassia area of Embakasi Sub-County after a scrupulous operation by the law enforcement officers,” DCI said.

The detectives further revealed that while carrying out their operation they were able to rescue nine minors and 47 adult victims.

“During the operation, the officers raided a residential building, apprehended the offenders, and rescued 9 minors and 47 adult victims,” DCI stated.

The victims were taken to the Embakasi police station for protective custody while the suspects were escorted to the Muthaiga police station for processing pending arraignment.

In addition, the detectives said they were ready to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.

They further asked Kenyans to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour that would assist the detectives in curbing the menace.

Victims of human trafficking

The recent arrest comes a month after a driver and his turnboy were arrested on June 5, 2024. From the incident, 17 persons who were believed to be victims of human trafficking were rescued.

The victims were said to be men of Ethiopian descent, who were escorted to Makupa police station after they were found being ferried by a lorry.

“Acting on intelligence, the sleuths laid a trap at Makupa bridge where they intercepted an Isuzu lorry Reg. No. KCL 849M that was being driven by Richard Mbeke,” DCI revealed.

“Upon opening the lorry’s carriage, 17 men of Ethiopian origin were rescued from therein and escorted to Makupa Police Station in the company of the lorry’s driver and his turnboy Joseph Ndung’u.”
