DCI nabs 2 women in Nairobi with bundles of fake US Dollars worth Ksh70M

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended two people in Nairobi following a raid that uncovered large amounts of counterfeit US currency.

According to a report by the detectives on Friday, August 29, 2025, the operation was based on solid intelligence that led officers from the DCI Nairobi Regional Office to apprehend the persons of interest.

“Detectives from the DCI Nairobi regional office have apprehended two women in possession of substantial quantities of counterfeit US dollars,”DCI said.

Following the report by DCI, the persons of interest have been identified as Ifrah Ali Jeyte and Qamar Salat Abdi.

“Acting on solid intelligence, detectives conducted a well-coordinated operation in Upper Hill where they arrested the female suspects, Ifrah Ali Jeyte and Qamar Salat Abdi,” DCI said.

Detectives have further revealed that after a swift search, the Police were able to identify numerous bundles of 100 USD notes cleverly concealed in a handbag.

DCI recover Ksh70million

Upon counting the fake currency at the DCI Nairobi Area Headquarters, officers uncovered counterfeit notes amounting to USD 560,000, approximately Ksh70 million.

“The magnitude of their operation became evident when officers conducted a count of the counterfeit currency at DCI Nairobi Area Headquarters, uncovering a total of USD 560,000, equivalent to approximately Ksh 70 million,” DCI said.

According to the DCI, both key persons of interest are currently in custody as detectives finalise investigations ahead of their arraignment in court.

“Both suspects remain in custody, undergoing processing as detectives prepare for their impending arraignment,” DCI said.

Police raid Ngara

The incident follows a similar one where Police apprehended seven people in Nairobi following a raid that uncovered large amounts of counterfeit US currency.

In a statement posted on their X account on Monday, August 11, 2025, the DCI reported that the operation was carried out by National Police Service officers from the Central Police Station, acting on intelligence received.

While giving details of the raid, DCI stated that the officers targeted a premises in a building located in Ngara, where they discovered thirty-six bundles of counterfeit US dollar notes.

Additionally, during the operation, they recovered two plastic replicas resembling US currency, sheets of black paper cut to the size of banknotes, and other materials believed to be used in the production of fake money.

“Upon searching the premises, the officers uncovered thirty-six bundles of counterfeit US currency, two plastic replicas resembling USD notes, black paper resembling currency, and other items believed to be involved in this illicit activity,” the statement continued.

According to the DCI, the group of seven individuals currently in custody includes nationals from three countries – one Tanzanian, one Congolese, and four Kenyan citizens.
