DCI arrests seven individuals over fake US dollars

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has apprehended seven people in Nairobi following a raid that uncovered large amounts of counterfeit US currency.

In a statement posted on their X account on Monday, August 11, 2025, the DCI reported that the operation was carried out by National Police Service officers from the Central Police Station, acting on intelligence received.

“Acting on intelligence, National Police Service officers based at the Central Police Station have apprehended seven individuals suspected of making counterfeit US dollars,” the statement reads.

Ngara raid

While giving details of the raid, DCI stated that the officers targeted a premises in a building located in Ngara, where they discovered thirty-six bundles of counterfeit US dollar notes.

Additionally, during the operation, they recovered two plastic replicas resembling US currency, sheets of black paper cut to the size of banknotes, and other materials believed to be used in the production of fake money.

“Upon searching the premises, the officers uncovered thirty-six bundles of counterfeit US currency, two plastic replicas resembling USD notes, black paper resembling currency, and other items believed to be involved in this illicit activity,” the statement continued.

According to the DCI, the group of seven individuals currently in custody includes nationals from three countries – one Tanzanian, one Congolese, and four Kenyan citizens.

“The individuals are currently in custody, undergoing processing, and awaiting their court appearance,” the statement added.

Similar operation

This incident comes weeks after a raid in Mombasa, which led to the recovery of a cache of foreign currency and rolls of bhang.

In a statement posted on its X account on Sunday, July 13, 2025, DCI disclosed that operatives acting on a tip-off intercepted a man who was found in possession of these items.

“Mombasa Anti-Narcotics detectives have nabbed a drug trafficker along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, seizing a stash of cannabis and a pile of Tsh 5M. Acting on a tip-off, the sleuths intercepted a Nissan matatu. Upon searching the vehicle, officers uncovered three bags,” DCI stated.
