A 30-year-old man has been arrested after being accused of defiling a 13-year-old girl at his house in Kamobiriri village in Kapletundo ward, Sotik sub-county in Bomet County.

The person of interest is said to have locked the minor in his house for three days now, and he has been defiling her.

Sibaiyan location chief Jonstone Terer said they have been searching for the girl since her disappearance when they got a tip-off leading to the man’s house.

” I got a call from a Kapletundo chief requesting for reinforcement in searching for the girl, and luckily, we were given information that led us to the man’s house,” he said.

Terer said they searched the house, but it was difficult to locate the girl, and they almost gave up because the girl is too tiny to be seen lying on the bed.

The administrator said they had a difficult time because the parents of the person of interest were trying to protect him even when they clearly knew the mistake that their child had committed.

” It’s very unfortunate that his parents were trying to convince us not to arrest him; parents should understand the law,” he added.

Major problem

The chief said rising defilement cases are becoming the major challenge in the education sector, and it should be a collective responsibility to find a lasting solution

He said many young children have dropped out of school due to early pregnancies. He pointed a finger at the parents who hide such cases and let the perpetrators walk freely, hence encouraging defilement.

Terer has sent a strong warning to anyone trying to lure school-going children that their days are numbered.

The chief said the girl is very bright in school and always at the top of her class. He said the person of interest will be arraigned in court, and he will be charged with defilement of a minor.

The incident comes as Kilifi North, Magarini, Ganze, and Malindi have emerged as the hardest-hit teenage pregnancy and defilement despite several awareness campaigns; activists say the true numbers could be much higher due to underreporting and delayed justice.
