5 injured after officer’s firearm goes off at Bungoma Court

There was panic at the Bungoma Law Courts after a firearm accidentally discharged during the hearing of a criminal case.

According to a statement by Judiciary spokesperson Paul Ndemo, the incident happened on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at around 10:50 am when a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer’s gun went off inside the High Court.

The bullet injured the officer himself, a Kenya Prisons officer and three civilians who were present in court.

According to the Judiciary, all five victims were immediately rushed to Bungoma Referral Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. They were reported to be in stable condition.

Ndemo assured the public that there is no cause for panic.

“At 10:50 am, during the hearing of a criminal matter in the High Court, a DCI officer’s firearm accidentally discharged a bullet, injuring him, a Kenya Prison’s Officer and three civilians. All five were rushed to Bungoma Referral Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. They are all reported to be in stable condition. There were no serious injuries or fatalities,” the statement read in part.

He added that the safety of court users had not been compromised and normalcy had returned at the law courts.

“All court officials as well as members of the public at the Court are safe and there is therefore no need for alarm. The County security team has since visited the Courts and is assessing the situation. The Judiciary will keep the public informed on the matter,” the spokesperson added.
