Two persons of interest have been apprehended who attempted to swindle a petrol station out of Ksh1.2 million worth of diesel.

The two individuals were caught in the act on Sunday, March 24, 2025, evening at Sajjy Petrol Station in Oloililai Sub-County, Bisil Township.

According to a statement shared on Monday, March 24, 2025, by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the persons arrived at the petrol station at around 4 pm in an Isuzu NPR tanker, bearing registration number KCC 312G. They claimed to have made a direct bank payment of Ksh1.2 million to the petrol station’s owner and requested 6,000 litres of diesel.

“Last evening, an attempt by two hoodlums to rob a Kajiado petrol station over Sh 1.2 million worth of diesel ended in futility after a keen pump attendant detected their scheme. At 4pm, an Isuzu NPR tanker pulled over at Sajjy Petrol Station located in Kajiado’s Oloililai Sub-County within Bisil township, where the two occupants posing as men of means sought to draw 6,000 litres of diesel,” the statement read in part.

To make their story convincing, they presented proof of payment and pretended to be in constant communication with the station owner.

The pump attendant, not wanting to cause unnecessary conflict, began fueling their vehicle and had pumped approximately 100 litres when he excused himself to verify the payment. After making a quick call to his boss, the attendant confirmed that no such transaction had been made and that there was no prior arrangement for such a purchase.

“Pretending to be in constant communication with the owner of the petrol station, the two alleged to have already paid Sh 1.2 million directly to the bank account of the ‘boss’, given the amount involved. Without disputing the proof of payment provided, the attendant went ahead to initiate the process but excused himself briefly after pumping about 100 litres.

He made a call to his boss, who confirmed his fears. Neither such payment had been made nor was there any such arrangement,” DCI narrated.

Attendant

Realizing the fraud, the attendant discreetly signalled his colleagues using a predetermined alert. The station staff swiftly apprehended the suspects and immediately contacted the police. Upon arrival, officers found the two securely restrained and took them into custody.

The law enforcement officers said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had travelled from Nairobi and were part of a larger syndicate targeting petrol stations in smaller towns. Their arrest has now triggered further investigations to dismantle the network behind these fraudulent activities.

Authorities have since detained their vehicle as investigations continue.

“Maintaining his calm, the attendant beckoned his colleagues with a signature alert, who pounced on the two and alerted the police. Police officers arrived to find the two cushy life-seekers securely restrained, who had since been encouraged to identify themselves,” authorities said.

Adding;

“The two men were re-arested, and their vehicle registration number KCC 312G detained. Further grilling revealed that the two had traveled from Nairobi, and belonged to a bigger syndicate that is now targeting petrol stations in smaller towns.”
