The sting operation, carried out across Umoja, Kisumu Ndogo, Tuwani, Bondeni, and Mitume, marks a significant step in efforts to dismantle organised crime in the area.
According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the arrests were made following a well-coordinated raid involving multiple security units.
“The suspects are currently in custody, undergoing profiling and processing, pending arraignment in court as the crackdown continues,” the DCI X post read, released on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.
Sleuths say the crackdown is part of a broader strategy to restore public safety and curb gang-related violence in Trans Nzoia County.
Murkomen on the crackdown
The operations come days after Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced a crackdown on criminal gangs re-emerging in parts of the Western region.
The gangs, Murkomen said, resumed operations of extortion, harassment, and political alignment and are being blamed for rising insecurity and fear among locals.
Speaking during the Kiambu chapter of the Jukwaa la Usalama security engagement in Kitale, Tranz Nzoia County, Murkomen issued a stern warning to the gangs.
“These criminal gangs are thriving because of political influence. They are extorting locals and seeking cover from politicians. They will not be spared,” he said.
The CS made it clear that the government will not tolerate the resurgence of organised criminal groups and said law enforcement agencies will target ringleaders for arrest and prosecution.
“It will not be business as usual,” he warned.
“These are the same groups mobilised for demonstrations. We are going to be firm in our approach.”
Murkomen called on the Judiciary and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to continue playing their part to ensure justice is served and the security sector remains effective.
The Interior CS emphasised the need for a collaborative approach to security, urging communities, local leaders, and enforcement agencies to work together.
“The resurgence of these gangs, especially in urban slums, poses a direct threat to national security. We will make arrests and prosecute them for extortion and related crimes,” he affirmed.
