Thee Pluto opens up on losing Ksh6 M in short‑term rental business

Popular YouTuber and entrepreneur Robert Ndegwa Kamau, popularly known as Thee Pluto, has candidly shared how his forays into various businesses, including short‑term rentals, led to a total loss of Ksh6 million.

Speaking to Dr Ofweneke, Thee Pluto recounted how his three short‑term rental businesses on the coast collapsed. He said he had been earning up to Ksh 150,000 per month from each rental

Apart from the rental business, the content creator also revealed that he was forced to shut down his other businesses.

“I have lost a lot of money setting up those short-term rental businesses. It cost me like Ksh6 million. I lost all of it, one in Witeithie, I used like Ksh 1.8 million,” he shared.

“There was a post I made about the businesses I failed. In Juja, I had a movie shop, a fast food court, bicycles for hire shop. Witeithie, I had a hotel. I also had 3 short-term rentals in Mombasa Sultan Palace, Kikambala, and Mtwapa, bringing like Ksh150k per month each, they all collapsed.”

“I have done so many businesses, they fail and every time I fail I do not quit because quitters are not winners. Every time I fail I know how I failed, so that I do not repeat it again.”

Failed businesses

This revelation comes after he announced the closure of seven businesses after incurring huge losses amid the harsh economy.

In a social media post, shared on July 11, 2025, he listed the failed ventures as he encouraged the public to hold on and not give up.

“Some of the businesses I failed in so far lost millions, and I didn’t give up. What is your excuse?” he challenged.

Among the businesses Thee Pluto had to shut included 3 short-term rentals in Mombasa Sultan Palace, Kikambala, and Mtwapa, a hotel in Witeithie, a movie shop in Juja, a clothing line in Nairobi Textiles, a boutique in Sawa Mall in Nairobi CBD, and Dreamride Car Hire near the former Quiver along Thika Road.

He also noted that the furniture store he previously owned was closed due to minimal profits but had not failed.

“It did not fail, I just closed it due to minimal profits,” he clarified.

Dropping school

Thee Pluto also disclosed that he dropped out of university to pursue business ventures without his parents’ knowledge

I deferred my academics to look for money. My parents did not know I stopped going to school to start a business, they only knew when my cousin, whom we joined together at the university, graduated.
