Music group Sauti Sol used the same Modern Coast bus KCF 614 U which was involved in the Nithi bridge tragedy that claimed the lives of 33 people.
The 43-seater Mombasa-bound bus on Sunday, July 24, 2022, lost control and plunged into River Nithi at the Nithi bridge black spot in Tharaka Nithi County.
The ill-fated Modern Coast bus KCF 614 U was prone to accidents dating back to 2016 when Kenyans on social media raised several complaints.
KCF 614 U involved in accident while hired by Sauti Sol
Sauti Sol hired and branded Modern Coast bus KCF 614 U which they used for their Live and Die in Afrika Tour which started in late 2016 and went all the way into 2017.
The quartet used the Modern Coast bus to traverse the country to popularise their newly released album Live and Die in Afrika.
On April 19, 2017, Sauti Sol’s tour bus belonging to Modern Coast was involved in a road accident near Malindi.
The accident occurred when the tour bus rammed into a stationary lorry that had been parked on the road moments after it had been involved in another accident with a Tuk Tuk.
According to reports, the Sauti Sol tour bus was heading to Nairobi from Malindi when the unfortunate accident happened. The driver suffered major injuries that led to his death as two other passengers travelling on the bus were rushed to the hospital for immediate treatment.
“Our bus from Malindi to Nairobi Reg: KCF 614u has been involved in an accident near Malindi airport. The accident that has happened near Malindi airport was fatal and 2 casualties rushed to Malindi district hospital. The two casualties who were passengers are out of danger and we wish them quick recovery. And we mourn with family and friends of the departed soul. Our bus hit a stationary lorry which had been involved in another accident with a tuk tuk,” Sauti Sol’s management said in part in a statement posted on Facebook.
