Revellers at Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi’s Timba XO club in Eldoret were treated to an unexpected moment on the night of November 21, 2025, when Anglican priest Father Michael Watenga made a surprise appearance.

In videos circulating online, Father Watenga is seen walking into the club dressed fully in his clerical attire, wearing a green scarf over a white and black gown.

A female staff member ushered him in while holding a placard that read “Padre Michael in The House,” drawing cheers from excited revellers.

The clips also show him collecting what appeared to be money from patrons as the crowd cheered loudly. The brief interaction created excitement inside the club, with many surprised to see a priest in such a setting.

Father Michael Watenga serves under the Anglican Church of Kenya’s Diocese of Kitale. He is known online for his unconventional approach to ministry, often appearing in unexpected public spaces to engage with young people.

Preaching in pubs

Michael recently spoke about his growing outreach efforts, saying he has deliberately taken his ministry to places where many would least expect pubs and entertainment spots. He explained that he intends to meet people exactly where they are, especially those who drink, because he believes they also deserve to hear the gospel in an environment that feels familiar and non-judgmental.

His message, he said, is rooted in the belief that people who drink are still human beings with struggles, hopes, and the capacity for transformation. According to him, the gospel should reach people more deeply than a bottle of alcohol, and it should touch hearts in ways that encourage real change.

Michael emphasised that he does not judge anyone he encounters. He noted that even Jesus embraced and mingled with all kinds of people, and he aims to do the same. His mission, he said, is to meet individuals in their daily environments, create genuine connections, and spread a message of hope and understanding.

He also revealed plans to expand his outreach beyond his usual areas. He intends to move from Nairobi to Nakuru, Kisumu and other major towns, encouraging people to invite him to clubs so he can continue spreading his message. In his lighthearted style, he added that those who welcome him should also be ready to contribute through offerings.

“My name is Padre Michael Watenga. I have been trending recently on TikTok and all over social media. I am the priest who has been preaching to people in pubs. Drinkers are human beings too. This gospel should go deeper than a bottle of alcohol. It should reach their hearts and transform their lives.

I do not judge. Even Jesus did not judge. I meet everyone, I mingle with them. I will start going from Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, and all over, so see you when you invite me. And remember to give an offering.”
