Mwalimu Rachel has cautioned Kenyans not to be misled by the glamour displayed during the recent Miss Lang’ata pageant, which took place on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

The event left many surprised at how beautiful and confident the contestants appeared on the runway, despite being inmates.

Fellow cohost DJ Xclusive praised the contestants, saying, “Miss Lang’ata. I just loved how, despite everything the ladies have done, on that day, I saw many people online who were actually surprised that kuna warembo wengi sana wako ndani. And I am like, yes, it happens.”

The public’s admiration reflected how the pageant can temporarily transform perceptions and showcase participants in a polished, positive light.

Reality behind the glamour

While celebrating the contestants’ poise and confidence on Monday, October 13, 2025, Mwalimu Rachel reminded the public not to be fooled by appearances.

She said, “Since we celebrate them, isidanganye watu that huko ndani si kubaya vile. Let me tell you this, once the makeup comes off, and then they go back to factory settings, and that uniform is on you. That lovey-dovey thing they were experiencing while on stage, I don’t think it remains. I don’t think it stays on. Just as a reminder, ukienda katika hali ya uhalifu, prison is not fun.”

Her remarks provide a reality check, warning that the glamour seen during the pageant is temporary and does not change the harsh conditions of incarceration.

The annual Miss Lang’ata pageant provides inmates with a platform to express talent, creativity, and confidence. It allows the public to see personalities beyond convictions and gives participants a sense of normalcy and achievement.

Among the titleholders is Ruth Kamande, who is serving a life sentence after fatally stabbing her boyfriend 25 times. Despite her sentence, Ruth has pursued modelling, proving that inmates can still chase personal goals and express themselves creatively.

The pageant encourages participants to build confidence, practice skills, and experience accomplishment even within a restrictive environment.

While the pageant celebrates beauty and creativity, Mwalimu Rachel’s warning reminds the public that prison life is harsh and crime carries serious consequences. Kenyans are urged not to be swayed solely by the glamour on stage.
