Media personalities Alex Mwakideu and Fred Arocho have weighed in after musician Bahati addressed his much-publicised Ksh1 million pledge to the Harambee Stars.

The conversation has sparked a fresh round of debate on money, generosity, and the noise surrounding celebrity promises.

Radio host Alex Mwakideu could not resist poking fun at the situation, cheekily remarking that Bahati had even joked he could buy a TV station. Turning the heated money debate into light banter.

Sports journalist Fred Arocho, however, took a different tone in a morning radio show on Friday, August 29, 2025. In his characteristic style, Arocho dropped a sharp statement about wealth and silence.

“Pesa haipendi kelele. Palipo na pesa hamna kelele. Palipo na kelele pamejaa na lofa. Mara mingi sipendi kujibu jibu. Hata huyu sitamjibu. Tajiri hana kelele. Ingia kwa gari ya tajiri, hutaskia …kumetulia… huyo ni lofa,” Arocho remarked, suggesting that those who truly possess wealth rarely feel the need to make noise about it.

A question of promises

The contrasting remarks came after Bahati finally addressed why his widely-publicised donation to Harambee Stars has yet to materialise. The pledge, announced with much fanfare weeks ago, had left fans and observers wondering why it had not been fulfilled.

Speaking candidly at his Nairobi home with gospel artist DK Kwenye Beat on Thursday, August 28, Bahati claimed the issue had been turned into unnecessary drama by individuals bent on sabotaging the gesture.

“Kuna watu wana sabotage hii process ya mimi kupea Harambee Stars hii one million. Ndio ikue maneno mingi maneno mingi,” Bahati explained, insisting that the matter had been exaggerated.

The “Adhiambo” hitmaker further downplayed the weight of the amount in question, brushing off the suggestion that Ksh1 million was anything to boast about.
“Hii ni one million, two million, 3 million. One million is too small for me. Hiyo si pesa tunasumbuana nayo kila saa online. Hii ni kitu kidogo. Avoid the people who think one million is a lot of money. That is a poor mindset,” he stated.

While Bahati insists sabotage is the reason for the delay, the reactions from Mwakideu and Arocho highlight the different ways money and reputation are perceived in Kenya’s entertainment and sports circles. The conversation around Bahati’s pledge continues to fuel debate long after the promise was first made.
