Popular content creator Mitchelle Joyce Akoth Oruko, known as Mjaka Mfine, has revealed that her father wanted her to be a lawyer against her plans to venture into music.

Speaking on the YouTube show Feast with Friends on Friday, November 21, 2025, Mjaka shared that she was born in Umoja but grew up in Kayole Junction, Obama Estate.

From a young age, she loved playing basketball, but her father discouraged her, saying it was a sport for boys and wanted her to focus on more appropriate activities for girls.

Mjaka explained that while she dreamed of becoming a musician, her father refused to support that path. Concerned she might go astray, he moved her to a different school, hoping to guide her toward a safer and more traditional future.

“I was born in Umoja but grew up in Kayole Junction, Obama Estate. I started playing basketball. My dad was like, basketball ni ya wanaume, focus on vitu za wasichana. My dad wanted me to be a lawyer. I wanted to be a musician, you know, I can sing. But pia hiyo, my dad refused. So when I was playing basketball, I was more of a tomboy, and I’m from the ghetto, mzae akaona atapoteza mtoto, akatupeleka ushago, then I started a new life in another school,” she shared.

Relationship with Mokaya

Mjaka Mfine has also dismissed rumours of a romantic relationship with fellow creator Mokaya, clarifying that their relationship is purely professional. She explained that their close social media presence and frequent photos together reflect their collaboration, not romance.

“No, we are not dating. You know when you date your work partner, kazi haitafanyika. Imagine if I date Mokaya, and then I see him with another girl on set, I will obviously feel jealous. We are just workmates. We take a lot of photos together, it is called winning together.”

Mokaya echoed this, calling Mjaka a great workmate and noting that their on-screen chemistry fuels gossip, but their relationship remains professional. Both creators have consistently stated there is no romantic involvement.

Mjaka, who began content creation in 2020, is now one of Kenya’s most-followed creators, while Mokaya, a Kenyatta University English literature student, balances his studies with a growing comedy career. Their collaborations are celebrated for their humour, chemistry, and relatable social commentary.
