Popular actress and producer Jackie Matubia found herself in the midst of chaos as she bravely joined protests against the Finance Bill 2024.

Matubia joined a section of Kenyans on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, for protests dubbed Occupy Parliament, which coincided with the tabling of the Bill in the House.

Despite the risks, Matubia stood firm to the extent of enduring tear gas, all in solidarity with those who could not physically be there.

Amidst the conversation about the bill and as Kenyans prepared for the much-anticipated protests, Matubia said she had to be counted among those who took part.

Additionally, Matubia shared that her participation in the protests was not only intended to bring attention to the issue but also to demonstrate her unwavering support for those without a voice.

“Mimi nimzalendo leo nimekula teargas… I did it for everyone who couldn’t do it. May our voices as the youth of this country be heard…#rejectthefinancialbill,” Matubia remarked.

Occupy parliament protest

In the past week, a group of activists requested Kenyans to turn up in large numbers around Parliament to protest against the Finance Bill, 2024.

Additionally, the organizers directed their participants to dress in black and to carry placards with messages rejecting the tax proposals.

The ‘Occupy Parliament’ protests were meant to influence and pressurise MPs to vote against the bill and its proposed taxes which have been perceived as ‘punitive’.

The Opposition coalition Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance directed its MPs to oppose the Finance Bill, 2024, however, its lawmakers did not participate in Occupy Parliament protests.

“Kenyans deserve better and we will not stop fighting for them to be given the voice and direction they so richly deserve,” Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka said on June 14, 2024.

Protesters were asked to maintain sobriety and calm, but as the march to Parliament began, clashes between protestors and the police erupted.

Mwangi claimed that some of the protest’s organisers and social media mobilisers were arrested.
